Targeting Your Target Market

In order to increase your chances of success in business, one of the most important things you can do is advertise. But there is one important thing you need to know before you can get started advertising, and that is who your target market is. After all, if you do not know what your target market is, you will be unable to advertise in a manner that catches your target market's attention. After you figure out your target market, the next step is just as important; you must learn how to direct your advertising at this target market. Follow these tips in order to target your target market.

One of the first things you should realize, in marketing, is that people buy products for one of three main reasons: to satisfy a need, to solve a problem, or to make themselves feel good. This means that you need to know your customers - know why they are buying your product or service - in order to market it to them effectively. This is the angle you will want to play up in your advertising.

The next thing you will need to do in order to effectively target your target market is to break your target market down into smaller pieces. It's not easy to market to such a broad group when you simply narrow down your target market as "People between the ages of 18 and 34." For instance, is your target market typically affluent, or are they more likely to be middle-class? Are they male or female, married or unmarried? Is your target full of blue collar workers, or is it full of white collar workers? These smaller pieces will go a long way in helping you understand exactly how to market your company and your product to your target market.

Finally, you need to put in time doing research! A lot of businesses skip this step, deciding that they "know everything already," and they miss a lot of little things that could help them. The more research you do, the more effective you can make your advertising. You can take huge strides toward achieving success by just taking small steps in this area.

Of course, in any business or company, marketing plays an important role. But the whole idea of marketing falls flat if the advertising in question is ineffective! Know your target market, and know how to target them effectively.
