How To Hire Good Employees
Chances are, you have - at one point or another - heard horror stories about nightmare employees. In fact, you have probably come across a few nightmare employees of your own, especially if you are in charge of hiring employees. The reaction to nightmare employees can be to wonder, "How on earth did this person get to be this way?" But the introspective reaction is actually more appropriate here, wherein you ask, "How on earth did I hire this person?" Of course, hiring is not just about avoiding the nightmare employee; it is also about hiring the employee who will become a prize of yours down the road. It is about hiring employees who will make your company better, and who you can promote again and again. How can you go about making sure you hire such employees? The answer is actually very simple. Hiring good employees begins at the resume process. It is easy to interview all the people who have submitted resumes, but in the long run, it is even easier to get rid of those resumes that belong to unqualified applicants. Take the time to call applicants you are not quite sure about; after all, you'll be happy you did if you were thinking about throwing an application away, and this person ends up being a prize employee, and you will likewise be happy if you were thinking about scheduling an interview and you find out it would have been a big waste of time. Finally, take the time to examine the attention the applicant gave their resume; an applicant with a sloppy resume is likely to become a sloppy employee. When it comes time for the interviews themselves, focus on the applicant's attitude and intelligence. A smart person with a good attitude is far more likely to do a good job, even if their application reveals that they are less accomplished, than an applicant with a lot of accomplishments and a surly disposition. Finally, while interviewing, allow the interviewee to ask questions. In this way, you can gain a greater understanding of the ways in which this person's mind works, and you can get to know them better. Generally speaking, future "prize employees" are likely to have intelligent questions to ask; this will help you gain a greater understanding of the kind of person they are. The hiring process is one of the most important elements among everything that goes into running a successful business. After all, it all begins with the employees; and if you are the one hiring the employees, it all begins with you.
